BELGICUM by Stephan Vanfleteren

This is a collection of photographs by Belgian photographer Stephan Vanfleteren. He is famous for his black-and-white documentary photographs of conflict zones such as Kosovo and Afghanistan, but he is also known for his private, everyday photographs, which show his duality as a photographer.As the name suggests, "Belgicum" is a photographic project about his homeland, Belgium, and it is a collection of photographs that unifies these two aspects of his work.
While he objectively captures the country of Belgium, which is geographically sandwiched between powerful countries and has an unbroken history, his loving perspective of his homeland is woven into the mix, resulting in a personal collection of photographs. It is a "journey" that allows us to pick up the book as a "journey" without any tension in turning the pages. But it is definitely a small "documentary" as well.

ベルギーの写真家、ステファン・ヴァンフレーテレンの写真集。コソボやアフガニスタンなど紛争地域の、モノクロームのドキュメンタリー写真で有名な彼だが、傍でプライベートな日常写真にも定評があり、写真家としてその二面性が窺える。
本書『Belgicum』はその名の通り、彼の故郷ベルギーに関する写真プロジェクトであるが、彼のその二面性が一つになった写真集であると言える。 地理的に強国に挟まれ、傷の絶えない歴史を持つベルギーという国を客観的にカメラに納める中で、故郷としての、彼の愛のある視点が織り交ぜられ、私的な写真集として終着している。それによって我々はページを捲ることに対して緊張感を持つことなく、「旅」としてこの本を手に取ることができる。しかしそれも間違いなく、一つの小さな「ドキュメンタリー」であるのだが。
